Young Avengers Creator Developing Marvel Superheroine TV Series For ABC

Young Avengers Creator Developing Marvel Superheroine TV Series For ABC

Prior to co-creating the Young Avengers in 2005, Allan Heinberg made his mark on Party of Five, Sex and the City, The O.C., and Gilmore Girls. Now, Heinberg is bringing some of Marvel’s superheroines to ABC for a new TV project.

Deadline is reporting that ABC has already given a production commitment to Heinberg’s currently untitled Marvel show. Heinberg is writing the script, which will focus on “female characters with superpowers.” The report indicates that the drama will utilize “lesser known Marvel characters.” That would seem to rule out She-Hulk, whose rights may still be tied up with NBCUniversal. But perhaps it could open the door for Kate Bishop, the female Hawkeye whom Heinberg created for Young Avengers. Or perhaps this series would be an ideal way to introduce Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel. There are numerous possibilities, and there will be even more potential characters who can be used once the Disney and Fox deal closes.

Heinberg has also written Wonder Woman for DC and contributed the screenplay to the Amazon heroine’s feature film as well. Marvel TV and ABC Studios are producing Heinberg’s new show, which will be separate from the MCU shows heading to Disney’s streaming service. Marvel Studios will oversee the possible Scarlet Witch and Loki miniseries, while Marvel TV will continue to operate independently despite sharing the same cinematic universe.

Given the timing of this news, it seems likely that Heinberg’s Marvel project won’t premiere until Fall 2019 at the earliest. Although a 2020 premiere is also a strong possibility.
