Warner Bros. PicturesThe Nun has scared the competition away around the world and set a franchise record for The Conjuring series. Opening to $53.5 million domestically, the prequel added another $77.5 internationally for a worldwide total of $131 million. Previously the highest opening of the series came from the first Conjuring movie which opened in July of 2013 to the tune of $41.8 million, which still falls short of The Nun‘s debut when factoring in inflation adjustments. Overall The Conjuring 2 remains the highest grossing in the series with a final tally of $320 million worldwide, a feat that The Nun will almost certainly try to overcome. Directed by Corin Hardy, the film stars Demian BichirTaissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, Charlotte Hope, Ingrid Bisu, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her Conjuring 2 role as the title character.

Crazy Rich Asians saw its first real drop off, landing in second place for the first time since its release. The romantic comedy brought in a weekend total of $13.6 million (a drop off of 38%), which even by modern box office standards is still a favorable hold. Domestically the feature now sits at $136 million, coupled with its international $28.5 million the film now has brought in $164.7 million worldwide. Based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan, Crazy Rich Asians features an international cast of stars led by Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, and Awkwafina, with Ken Jeong and Michelle Yeoh. The large starring ensemble also includes Henry Golding, making his feature film debut, Sonoya Mizuno , Chris Pang, Jimmy O. Yang, comedian Ronny Chieng, Remi Hii, and Nico Santos  Jon M. Chu directed the contemporary romantic comedy.

The Jennifer Garner lead action-thriller Peppermint opened in third place at the domestic box office, bringing in an estimated $13.263 million this weekend, giving it a comparable opening to the likes of John Wick. Directed by Pierre Morel (Taken) and written by Chad St. John, the film also stars John Ortiz, John Gallagher, Jr., Juan Pablo Raba, Annie Ilonzeh, Jeff Hephner, Pell James, and Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith.

The Meg added another $6 million to its domestic haul for the three-day weekend, giving it a domestic total of $131 million. Internationally the action-thriller added another $11.3 million for an international total of $360.4 million, and giving The Meg a global total of $492 million. Directed by John Turteltaub, the film stars Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Sophia Shuya Cai, and Masi Oka.
