Sons of Anarchy Spinoff Mayans MC Is Happening at FX

It’s official! The long-rumored Sons of Anarchy spinoff is moving forward at FX. The show will be called Mayans MC. And original SOA creator Kurt Sutter will be back as a producer, alongside co-creator of this new series Elgin James. James is writing the script.

FX Network has only just begun script development on the spinoff, according to Variety. Mayans MC will be a dark and visceral family drama. It will focus on the American icons known as the 1% outlaw. Only this time, the stories will be filtered through a Latino lens. Says Sutter of bringing James into the mix to pen the pilot script.

“I wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice. Because I didn’t think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice.”

The Mayans motorcycle gang was a key player in several Sons of Anarchy episodes during the show’s impressive 7 year run on FX. It still stands at the highest-rated drama series in the history of the cable network. And Sutter has been with the channel even longer than Sons has been on the air. He began his career with FX working as a staff writer on The Shield. He would eventually rise to become an executive producer on that acclaimed series. Following the end of Sons of Anarchy, he went onto create the medeviel drama The Bastard Executioner for the network. Though, that show proved to be short lived.

Elgin James is perhaps best known for his debut feature as a director, Little Birds. It landed him on Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch list. Before becoming a filmmaker, he established the anti-racist Boston street gang FSU. He then moved to L.A. to hone his talents behind the camera, joining the Sundance Institute Feature Film program. Little Birds was placed into competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Just a few short months later, he was taken to prison on the gang-related charge of federal extortion.

Following his time spend behind bars, James signed onto directed A Million Little Pieces, which begins shooting later this year. He is also developing a movie based on the troubled life of actress Jean Seberg, adapted from the biography “Breathless” by Garry McGee. It isn’t yet known if Elgin James will also direct the Mayans MC pilot, but that sounds most likely. At this time, FX has not set a premiere date for the spinoff.
