Pixar’s Toy Story 4 flies high with $238 million globally

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 4 opened with $118 million at the domestic box office, giving it the highest opening for a Toy Story film (adjusted for inflation, Toy Story 3 remains the top in the series). Toy Story 4 did mark the only movie of the summer 2019 season to have an opening weekend higher than $100 million (Aladdin opened with $91 million, but crossed $100 due to the four day weekend). Including Toy Story 4 and Aladdin, Disney now has the four highest openings of the year (Avengers: Endgame & Captain Marvel). Internationally, Toy Story 4 brought in $120 million for a global opening of $238 million.

Orion Pictures’ Child’s Play remake opened with a healthy $14 million haul which is on par with the 1988 original film after taking inflation into account. The Child’s Play series has never really set the box office on fire, but the remake was produced on a $10 million budget, putting it in a prime position to be a success for the studio.

Disney’s Aladdin held held firm at #3, dropping just 29.5% and bringing in $12.2 million domestic for a US total of $287.5 million, crossing the $800 million mark worldwide. Internationally the Guy Ritchie directed movie brought in $32.9 million for an international total of $522.6 million and a global total of $810.1 million. Aladdin remains the #3 film worldwide for 2019 (behind Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel).

Men In Black: International fell sharply from first place last week to fourth place this week, bringing in $10.75 million and dropping 64.2% week to week. The film’s domestic total now sits at $52.68 million. Internationally the sequel brought in $30.2 million for an international total of  $129.4 million and a global total of $182.1 million. The film will need a miracle to match the previous entries in the series, the lowest of which was 2002’s Men In Black II with $441.8 million worldwide (equivalent to $628.91 million in 2019).

Universal Pictures and llumination’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 fell to fifth place, bringing in $10.29 million for a domestic total of $117.58 million. Internationally the animated sequel now sits at $77.1 million with a worldwide total of $194.68 million. The first Secret Life of Pets movie brought in $875.5 million globally, over four times the total gross of the sequel thus far.
