New Movies on Blu-ray/DVD

Annihilation
Our favorite movie of the year so far is Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller that takes a deep dive into Lovecraftian cosmic dread. Natalie Portman plays a scientist (and ex military) who ventures into a zone affected by an alien energy known as The Shimmer, where the longer plants and animals stay the more their DNA gets rearranged. If you missed this movie in theaters be sure to check it out on Blu-ray or 4K!

Criterion Corner

Midnight Cowboy
Director John Schlesinger’s 1969 cinematic milestone stars a young Jon Voight as a male hustler from Texas trying to score big in New York City, and Dustin Hoffman as his seedy companion Ratso Rizzo. The Criterion Collection Blu-ray contains a new 4K digital restoration, along with a 1991 audio commentary from Schlesinger and much more!

Reissues

The Reincarnation of Peter Proud
This 1975 occult chiller from director J. Lee Thompson (Cape Fear) focuses on a man whose recurring nightmares lead him to believe he had lived before, which sends him on a quest to a New England town to discover the secrets of his past life. Features an audio commentary by Lee Gambin as well as deleted scenes.

Smash Palace
Roger Donaldson’s 1981 New Zealand feature is a darker play on Kramer vs Kramer as a man and wife’s marital discord plays out over the wrecking yard business they run together. The Blu-ray features a special hour-long making of documentary.

Bloodsuckers From Outer Space
This regional genre film has been resurrected by the folks at Vinegar Syndrome, with the film telling the silly story of a mysterious and invisible alien presence which lands in rural Texas, turning the townspeople into white-faced, bloodthirsty killers.

New on Digital HD

A Wrinkle in Time
It’s time to give Ava DuVernay’s visually colorful and vibrant adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s YA classic another consideration as it heads to digital. Three mystical guides lead the young Meg (Storm Reid) on an epic journey, tessering through time and space to find her father following his mysterious disappearance.

The Hurricane Heist
The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen helms this high-octane action flick about a treasury agent and a storm chaser out to stop a high-stakes heist during a Category 5 hurricane.

The Last Witness (exclusive clip)
Alex Pettyfer, Talulah Riley and Michael Gambon star in this period drama about an ambitious young journalist uncovers the horrific slaughter of 22,000 Polish officers during the Second World War, a secret that has been kept hidden for far too many years. Check out an exclusive clip in the player below!

Sequence Break (exclusive clip)

A reclusive video arcade repairman (Chase Williamson) experiences bizarre biomechanical mutations and Cronenbergian hallucinations when a mysterious new arcade machine appears in his shop. Reality itself threatens to fracture as the young man works to solve its mystery – and overcome the new chaos that has entered his life. Check out an exclusive clip from the film, which is now available exclusively on Shudder!
