Legendary acquires film rights to graphic novel God Country

Legendary Entertainment has acquired the worldwide film rights to the acclaimed graphic novel, God Country, written by Donny Cates and illustrated by Geoff Shaw. Cates is set to adapt the screenplay as well.

God Country was originally published in 2017 by Image Comics to critical acclaim. The first issue immediately sold out and had to be reprinted 4 times before being collected in trade paperback.

In God Country, Emmett Quinlan is an elderly widower rattled by dementia. Emmett isn’t just a problem for his children — his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home — as well as the surrounding West Texas town — a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. An enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…

The project marks the first time Lee and Jon Kramer of AfterShock Media will produce a project outside of their line of titles and will be the second collaboration for Legendary and AfterShock. Jon Silk brought the project in and is overseeing with Jay Ashenfelter for Legendary Entertainment.

Donny Cates is a renowned writer of comic books. His past works include Babyteeth from AfterShock Comics, Buzzkill from Dark Horse, and Redneck from Image. He’s also worked on Cosmic Ghost Rider, Venom, Doctor Strange and Thanos for Marvel. Cates is represented by UTA.

Launched in 2015, AfterShock Media has flourished as a publisher of creator-driven comic books and graphic novels aligned with an accomplished TV and film production company. The company is overseen by CEO, Jon Kramer, and President, Lee Kramer.
