Chucky returning to the big screen in Child’s Play remake

Our favorite serial-killing Good Guy doll is staying busy with a TV series in the works from franchise creator Don Mancini and now The Hollywood Reporter brings word hat Chucky will be heading back to the big screen in a Child’s Play remake.

Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) is set to direct the horror reboot from a script written by Tyler Burton (Kung Fury 2) for MGM. David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith (IT) will produce. It remains to be seen how the big screen remake of the first film will factor into the franchise moving forward as the in-development TV series is set to continue the plot threads from the most recent film.

The Child’s Play series has been running for 30 years, with the first film dropping in 1988 to box office success, generally positive reviews and a cult following, spawning six sequels that remained box office successes but slowly started earning more mixed and negative reviews, until the revitalized Curse of Chucky, which returned to the franchise’s horror roots and earned very positive reviews. The most recent installment, Cult of Chucky, was released on Blu-ray and video on demand last October and received strong reviews from critics. Brad Dourif has been a staple of the franchise since its inception, lending his voice to the murderous doll in all of the films.

Production on the Child’s Play remake is will begin this September in Vancouver.
