Julian Schnabel will direct the project focused on the time the painter spent in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France.
Willem Dafoe will play iconic painter Vincent van Gogh in the film At Eternity’s Gate, helmed by Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Before Night Falls).
Based on a screenplay by Schnabel and Jean-Claude Carriere, the film is centered on the time in Vincent’s life that he spent in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, France.
Jon Kilik, who has produced all of Schnabel’s projects, will produce At Eternity’s Gate, which will shoot on location in France. Rocket Science is handling international sales and CAA is representing the U.S rights.
“This is a film about painting and a painter and their relationship to infinity. It is told by a painter. It contains what I felt were essential moments in his life, this is not the official history – it’s my version. One that I hope could make you closer to him,” said Schnabel.
Dutch painter Van Gogh was known for his post-Impressionist art, including his most famous paintings Starry Night Over the Rhone, Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles and his self-portraits. In 1886, he moved to Paris where he met members of the avant-garde, including Paul Gauguin. At Eternity’s Gate explores the sacrifices van Gogh made to produce the iconic masterpieces that are instantly recognizable around the world today.
Dafoe stars in Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, which will make its world premiere in Cannes. He is currently filming Aquaman with Jason Momoa and will next be seen in Justice League, both for DC Comics and Warner Bros. He’s repped by CAA, The Artists Partnership and Circle of Confusion.
Schnabel helmed Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, for which he was named Best Director at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly also was nominated for four Academy Awards and won a Golden Globe. He’s repped by CAA.
