Showtime Announces That Homeland Will End After 8 Seasons

The story of Carrie Mathison is almost over. During an appearance at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Showtime Networks CEO David Nevins revealed that Homeland will come to a conclusion after the eighth season in 2019.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, Nevins stressed that Homeland’s end was not due to cancellation. Instead, he characterized the decision as a natural ending for the show.  “I do not want to hear the word cancellation,” said Nevins. “[Showrunner] Alex Gansa will bring the show to its proper conclusion.”

Earlier this year, Gansa told THR that Homeland season 8 would be his last year on the series regardless of whether Showtime wanted to continue the show without him. Claire Danes has starred in the series as Carrie Mathison since it debuted on Showtime in 2011, alongside Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson. The series reached its critical peak early in its run when Danes and her former co-star, Damian Lewis, won Emmy Awards for their 1st season performances. The show was also named the Best TV Drama at the 2012 Emmy Awards.

THR suggests that there is a possibility that Homeland could be continued with different characters in a spinoff down the line, but there are apparently no current plans for the world of the show beyond next year. The eighth season of Homeland will premiere on Showtime in June 2019.
