“Diversity in the media has improved, but it’s time to see more Hispanics on air … and in high-level decision-making,” Maria Elena Salinas, co-anchor of Noticiero Univision, said Monday as she was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Saying that she has covered nine presidential elections and countless other events, Salinas said the “most meaningful” work has been covering the “struggles and accomplishments … of immigrants.”

America Ferrera, also appearing Monday at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, had a similar message as she accepted the Television Chairman’s Award.

“Never has there been a time that I felt a more urgent call” to represent a diverse community, the SuperStore star and producer said. “I set out to make a career in a field that not a lot of people saw a future for someone like me — in the entertainment industry. I worked hard, but I was also fortunate to be in the right place at a time that the culture was ready.”
