Netflix's Barry Trailer Tells President Obama's Origin Story

Love it or hate it, we do have a new President-Elect. And with that comes a sad moment for Americans everywhere as they say good-bye to President Barack Obama. As Obama’s presidency draws to a close, experience the inspired story of where it all began with the debut of the Netflix original film Barry on December 16, 2016. We have the full-length trailer, which debuted today.

Debuting at the 2016 Toronto Film Festival to critical acclaim, Barry is a nuanced, artistic exploration of a pivotal year in the life of the 44th President of the United States. A young Barack Obama, known to his friends as “Barry,” arrives in New York City in the fall of 1981 to begin his junior year at Columbia University. His experiences over that pivotal school year lay the foundation for his views on race, government, and what it means to be an American.

Director Vikram Gandhi (Kumaré, HBO’s Vice), a Columbia University alumni, approached fellow alum Adam Mansbach (author of Go the F**k to Sleep) to help tell this origin story. And from that collaboration Mansbach penned the script. Now, we have one of the more interesting and unique biopics every released about a sitting U.S. President.

The film stars Australian newcomer Devon Terrell in a breakout performance as Barry, and features a strong supporting cast including Ashley Judd (Divergent, Double Jeopardy), Jenna Elfman (Friends With Benefits, Big Stone Gap), and up-and-comers Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood), and Avi Nash (Learning to Drive, “Silicon Valley”). The movie will arrive just in time to be enjoyed over the long holiday weekend.

An original movie, Barry will provided an alternative to the crowded multiplexes this Christmas. It will be streaming in the U.S. and Canada. Yet, it does face some stiff competition from the box office. It arrives just two days before the first ever Star Wars spin-off Rogue One. It will also face off against Will Smith’s fantasy drama Collateral Beauty. But with the power to move you, and make you think about the world, life and what is happening at this current moment in time, Barry should be one of the biggest movie hits of this upcoming winter season.
