Walking Dead Movie Will Happen Someday Says Showrunner

Ever since the show launched in 2010, AMC’s The Walking Dead has been an instant hit, with a massive fan base that keeps growing and growing. Some times, success on the small screen leads to a transition on the big screen, with TV hits such as The X-Files and The Simpsons putting out big screen movies while the shows were still on the air. The Walking Dead showrunner Scott M. Gimple revealed in a recent interview that he thinks a Walking Dead movie could actually happen one day, but he doesn’t know when that may be.

The Walking Dead is easily the biggest show on cable, averaging over 12 million viewers per episode, and some nights, it even gives most Sunday night shows on broadcast networks a run for their money. The show has already been renewed for Season 8 on AMC, with Robert Kirkman‘s comic books still running, with plenty of material still remaining to delve into with the TV series, which would span up to Season 11 at this current point in the comics. ComicBook.com spoke with executive producer and showrunner Scott M. Gimple, who teased that the question about a Walking Dead movie often comes up, but he doesn’t know when it will happen. Here’s what he had to say, joking which movie stars he’d like to cast in the movie version of The Walking Dead.

“That question comes up every now and again. I’m sure one way or another, one day, it’ll happen. I think it would be cool. William Shatner as Rick. We’ll get Edward James Olmos as Daryl. Hit all the big shows! Matthew Fox as The Governor!”

Even if a movie does happen, it remains to be seen if it would actually be set in the current timeline of the hit zombie series, or if it would take an entirely new direction. AMC’s prequel series Fear the Walking Dead, which is set on the other side of the country than The Walking Dead, is another big hit for the network, with the third season set to debut next year on AMC. It’s clear that a Walking Dead movie certainly isn’t a priority for anyone involved in the show at this point, but it’s possible that could change as the show continues.

For now, though, since the show continues to put up strong ratings week after week, don’t expect AMC or the show’s writers, producers and directors to put any effort forth into a Walking Dead movie. This current season of The Walking Dead will continue with Go Getters, airing Sunday, November 20 at 9 PM ET on AMC. Regardless of whether or not the movie happens, The Walking Dead likely won’t come off the air any time soon.
