Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Apocalypse, Macbeth) leads the cast of the film alongside Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight RisesInception), Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Ghostbusters), Jeremy Irons (The Borgias, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Brendan Gleeson (Edge of Tomorrow, the Harry Potter franchise). Justin Kurrzel, who previously worked with both Fassbender and Cotillard on Macbeth, is directing the film.

The Assassin’s Creed movie follows a character by the name of Callum Lynch who, through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

“It’s all new characters,” Kurzel recently told ComingSoon.net of how the film ties to the games . “They’ve all been designed and created from an original story. But the concept of the game and the spirit of the game is there and that is really to do with having access to these memories and the idea of history defining who you are. It’s an origin story, this film, so it’s about a man in the modern day who kind of discover who he is and the fact that his lives lead back years and years and years and generations and generations.”

Assassin’s Creed is set for a December 21, 2016 release.
