Top 10 Talking Animals in Anime

These anime animals have a lot to say. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we are counting down our picks for the Top 10 Talking Animals in Anime.
For this list we are counting down animals in anime that can form complete sentences and can hold a conversation. We’re allowing for robots inanimal form as long as all their robot parts are on the inside. We will not be including gods or mystical beings that take the form of animals, so characters like Kon form Bleach or Shenron from “Dragon Ball” series are out.

#10: Monokuma

“Danganronpa: The Animation” (2013)

Monokuma is the principal of Hope’s Peak Academy, and forces the students to compete in a death game where they must murder one another while trying to get away with it. Monokuma has a split personality, which is emphasized by his white and black look. His white side is cute and cuddly, while his black side is evil and manipulative and he is able to change these personalities in the blink of an eye. Just obey the rules, stay on his good side and don’t call him Teddy Bear.

#9: Luna

“Sailor Moon” (1992-97)

After the destruction of the Moon Kingdom, Luna was put into a cryogenic sleep and sent to Earth so she could find the reincarnation of Princess Serenity and her guardians. She, along with her partner Artemis eventually find Usagi, who is Serenity’s reincarnation, as well as the other Sailor Scouts. Luna plays the role of a mother figure to the group, often scolding Usagi for being immature. She also provides crucial information pertaining to the fallen Moon Kingdom and their respective enemies.

#8: Gamakichi

“Naruto” franchise (2002-)

During his training with the Toad Sage, Jiraiya, Naruto learned how to summon a toad to help him in battles. Although he was initially able to summon Gamabunta, it was his son Gamakichi that became Naruto’s main toad helper. Starting off as a small toad, Gamakichi grew up and matured alongside Naruto helping him in a few of his biggest battles. As he grew he gained many of his father’s habits including smoking, but also learned many ninja techniques to assist in battle. Both Gamakichi and Naruto carry on the legacy of the Toad Sage.

#7: Polar Bear

“Shirokuma Cafe” (2012-13)

This unique slice-of-life anime stars Polar Bear who runs the Shirokuma or ‘Polar Bear’ Cafe, which only serves organic foods and drinks. Polar Bear is a simple but quirky bear to tries to makes his friends lives a little more interesting. He does this by pulling harmless pranks or making bad puns just to get a reaction out of his customers. Besides just running his cafe he goes out of his way to help his friends.

#6: Meow

“Space Dandy” (2014)

When the titular Space Dandy and his robot sidekick QT arrive in a bar, they mistakenly believe that Meow was a new type of alien creature and try to capture him. After joining the crew of the Aloha Oe, Meow helps Dandy by providing him with information on how to find rare alien species, although it doesn’t always work out. Meow also displays some cat-like qualities including his fear of dogs and his laziness. Just don’t ask us to pronounce his real name.

#5: Hamtaro

“Hamtaro” (2000-06)

As the name cleverly suggest, Hamtaro is a hamster who lives with his owner Laura. Hamtaro spends most of his days adventuring and learning about the world with a group of other hamsters known as the Ham-Hams. Due to his innocence and naiveté Hamtaro is pretty clueless about things including the concept of love. Despite this he cares deeply for his friends as well as Laura and will do anything to help any of them. Hamtaro is quite possibly the cutest animal on this list.

#4: Tony Tony Chopper

“One Piece” (1999-)

This reindeer is the child-sized doctor of the Straw Hat crew, but don’t let his appearance fool you. After eating the Devil Fruit known as Hito Hito no Mi he gained the ability to transform into a human-sized reindeer which allows him to fight and help out the crew when they are in a pinch. Not only that, but thanks to a concoction of his own design Chopper is able to transform into other forms as well. However due to his small stature the bounty on his head is quite small and he is thought to be the crew’s pet.

#3: Happy

“Fairy Tail” (2009-)

Our number 3 has a name that perfectly describes his personality. Happy is Natsu Dragneel’s most trusted friend and partner. Originally coming from a parallel world, Happy is part of a race of cat creatures known as Exceeds. Natsu found Happy as an egg and hatched him. Happy has the ability to fly, which he uses to assist Natsu in many of his fights. Happy also plays comic relief in some of the show’s most serious moments by poking fun at the different characters, and even participating in battles armed with a fish.

#2 Doraemon

“Doraemon” franchise (1973-)

This Gadget cat hails from the 22nd century and traveled back in time to help his owns descendant, High School kid Nobi, becomes more successful. Unfortunately, Doraemon, literally has a screw loose and it’s functioning at optimal capacity. As a result, Doraemon is almost a child himself, and Nobi becomes as much an influence on him, as he has on the boy. Just because he is a robot, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have feelings and Doraemon is as fun, exciting and memorable as the living, breathing thing.
Before we reveal our top pick, here are a few Honorable Mentions.
Oolong
“Dragon Ball” franchise (1986-)
Ruby
“Rave Master” (2001-02)
Kyubey
“Puella Magi Madoka Magica” (2011)
Keroro
“Sgt. Frog” (2004-11)
Albert “Chamo” Chamomile
“Negima! Magister Negi Magi” (2005)

#1: Meowth

“Pokemon” (1997-)

That’s right! This cat is amazing because not only is he one of the few non-legendary Pokemon who can speak, but he actually taught himself how through tongue twisters. Being the third member of Team Rocket, Meowth helps Jesse and James as they continuously attempt to steal Ash’s Pikachu, often to disastrous results. Considering himself the brains of the group, Meowth often berates Jesse and James for their stupidity although he isn’t much better. In the end it doesn’t matter how many times we see him blast off, we’ll always be glad to see him again.
