October Horror Movie Recommendation: DOLLS

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…..

DOLLS

What’s Dolls about: Stranded during a storm, a family of three, a pair of hitchikers, and a man on his own stumble upon a creepy old house in the English countryside. The couple inside seem nice enough, but their vast collection of creepy looking dolls have eyes all over the house, and when the tiny footsteps start rustling during the night you don’t know who will make it out alive. Maestro Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond) directs the 1987 feature.

Why Dolls rules: A clear titan of the creepy doll subgenre, Dolls has some of the absolute best special effects with its titular killers with suberb gore and seamless stop motion effects. Plus its runtime is a clean 77 minutes, less than two episodes of whatever Netflix show you just binged.

How scary is Dolls: Your mileage will vary based on how startling you find the prospect of killer dolls anyway, which leans very heavily into that type of startling imagery. There’s also plenty of goopy gore to go around if the sight of flesh peeled skin isn’t your bag.

Be on the lookout for: All of the doll effects and stop motion work was completed by effects artist David Allen, who would go onto lend his killer doll expertise to start the Puppet Master franchise two years later (working on five of those films) with Charles Band’s Full Moon Features, who served as executive producer on Dolls via his Empire International banner.

Where to watch Dolls: Dolls can be watched for free with an Amazon Prime Video subscription.
