The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Amazon is developing Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels into a television series. The streaming service won the rights to the novels after a bidding war, which has been given a script-to-series deal with Scorpion creator Nick Santora set to show-run.

Amazon Studios, Skydance Television, and Paramount Television will produce the series, the same trio that brought Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan to the streaming platform last year.

Reacher has been the subject of twenty three novels written by Child, with a 24th set to be released later this year.

Tom Cruise previously appeared as the character in two movies. The first Jack Reacher film, released in 2012, made almost $220 million globally and received mostly positive reviews, despite the initial backlash behind Cruise’s casting. The sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, came out four years later and failed to wow critics or box office tallies.

Last year, Child revealed that no further movies starring Cruise would be made with the author citing Cruise’s lack of having the physicality described of Reacher in the novels. In the books, Child describes Reacher as 6’5″ with hands the size of dinner plates, much smaller than the Mission: Impossible star who stands 5’7″ tall.

Child even said last year how he would like to see the series be adapted on a streaming service and hoping for fan help in finding the right Reacher, saying: “I want all those readers who were upset about Tom Cruise to help me out – participate in choosing the right actor for the TV series. We’re rebooting and starting over and we’re going to try and find the perfect guy.”
