What Will Jon Favreau's Star Wars Live-Action TV Series Be?

Iron Man and The Jungle Book director Jon Favreau has been tapped to write and produce the Star Wars Live-Action TV Show for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. Disney has a long-standing, great working relationship with Favreau, who has proved himself to be an excellent blockbuster filmmaker and is currently working on their live-action version of The Lion King. But instead of tapping him to direct a Star Wars movie, the first ever live-action TV series set in a galaxy far, far away is now in his hands. The question is, what’s it going to be about?

As of right now, Disney and Lucasfilm are being pretty stingy on the details in regards to the specifics of the live-action Star Wars TV series. Even so, anyone who has watched Star Wars Rebels, which just wrapped up an excellent four-season run, knows that Star Wars storytelling on the small screen can be truly excellent. So the idea of having a guy like Favreau, who really knows how to blend great story with blockbuster visuals, bringing this universe to Disney’s streaming service is exciting. Here’s what Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had to say about the new series in a statement.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Since we don’t have any real specifics to go on, let’s speculate, shall we? There are a few great options for live-action shows within the Star Wars universe. One of the most obvious things to explore would be an era like the Old Republic, which is something fans have wanted for a very long time and could work perfectly as a serialized TV show. There’s also exploring something like Jedi training at an actual academy, which could follow something like the Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Video Game.

We haven’t heard anything official about the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie from Lucasfilm. Could they be turning that into a series instead? Let’s not forget about characters like Ahsoka Tano and Thrawn who could definitely use a live-action presence. My personal hope would be that Lucasfilm would do a Star Wars anthology series, in the vein of something like Fargo or True Detective, allowing for them to tell a new story every season. We’ve also heard the possibility of https://movieweb.com/star-wars-tv-series-live-action-2018-release-date/Star Wars Underworld, which would explore the seedier side of the galaxy with some of Star Wars’s most infamous Bounty Hunters. The options are nearly endless. Here’s what Jon Favreau had to say about his new gig.

“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

One thing worth remembering is that George Lucas spent years developing a live-action Star Wars TV series. There are tons of scripts sitting somewhere in a vault at Lucasfilm ready to go. It’s doubtful they would just pick that up as is, but that’s something to consider. Jon Favreau, for his part, has voiced characters in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, in addition to having a voice role in Solo: A Star Wars Story. So he’s not new to the franchise, but this is a significantly larger undertaking, to say the least. Currently, there’s no release date set for the live-action Star Wars series, but Disney’s streaming service will launch sometime next year. This news comes to us courtesy of StarWars.com.
