SIFF Capsule Review: Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Micucci and Dave Franco star in The Little Hours, a comedy about a trio of medieval nuns who swear, fight and fuck their way through their tedious lifestyle. Also tedious? The movie itself, a 90-minute film that evokes a few chuckles throughout but largely wastes the mass of recognizable stars writer/director Jeff Baena assembled for this absurd—but not absurd enough—tale.
The Little Hours relies too heavily on its conceit—the ridiculousness of raging, horny and violent nuns—and largely ignores the necessity of well-written humor. The cast is able to gloss over some of the movie’s weaknesses, but not most of them. God fucking bless.
