Keanu Movie Review

Keanu movie poster

Keanu is a crime-comedy with a cat, otherwise known as a movie my fiancé will like regardless of the crime or comedy. Yes, this mindless, rather pointless movie has a cute, adorable, squeaker of a kitten as the source of so much death and trouble, but thankfully Keanu is a funny, entertaining little affair, even if it falls short of being anything special.

“More Keanu” is the main piece of feedback my cat-loving, soon-to-be wife offered as the credits rolled, understandable given that every time that little bundle of fur appeared on screen—often wearing a kitten-sized do-rag—she and her friend squealed and giggled in delight. And while there is plenty for cat lovers to enjoy, the title character does disappear for long stretches, forcing the two stars, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, to shoulder the film.

And they largely succeed, delivering plenty of laughs over the film’s 95-minute running time. Keanu is funny, and occasionally violent, but even when it’s violent it’s funny, embracing the absurdity of the movie’s plot (two suburban guys and a bunch of gangsters all fighting over a cat).

Then again, Keanu is no comedy classic. Key and Peele are funny dudes and understandably have great chemistry together—they starred in a show together for several years—but the movie could benefit from some tighter editing. A few sequences, especially early on, drag on a minute too long, straining the humor in places. Some scenes, like one featuring Anna Farris playing a coke-fueled version of herself, isn’t as funny as it could have been. And as often as I laughed, I wouldn’t say the movie heralded in any particularly memorable moments that will be cherished for years to come.

Keanu was a fun watch, but it’s probably not one I’ll go out of my way to watch many times over.

Nonetheless, Keanu is a well-made, well written comedy that cherishes in its absurd premise and the antics that ensue. It never takes itself too seriously and accomplishes what intended to do, so who can fault it for that? “More Keanu,” my fiancé whispers in the shadows…
